588 CI BBC w/ a 8.3 Whipple Engine Build Specs

We completed this engine build 3 years ago and have had a few questions about its specifications. This article is to feature the complete build list and results!


The idea behind our choices were a high HP/TQ engine, with reliability in mind. This is our family boat engine and it is not a race boat.


Dyno results: 1075 HP / 1078 TQ

Boost: 10 lbs

Fuel: 91 octane


Specs:


AFR Heads: V2 24 Degree Heads 385 CC, 121 Combustion Chamber, Hydraulic Valve Springs (8061) .725 lift, 6500 rpm, Titanium Retainers, Inconel Exhaust valves, AFR Stud girdle 6202


Engine Block: Dart M tall deck 10.200”, 4.500 bore, w/ billet main caps


Crank: Bryant Billet 4.625


Rods: Oliver Max Plus - 6.535


Pistons: Race Tech Pistons 8:1 for boost, bore 4.500


Cam shaft: isky hydraulic roller 115 degree lobe, 1.5 degree cam advance, rocker ratio 1.7,

Intake .680 lift, .258 duration at .050 lift

Exhaust .680 lift, .266 duration at .050 lift


Lifters: isky ez bushing endurance lifters 


Whipple low profile dual core Intercooler. AN dash 10 fittings in & out. 


Carbs: 2 - BLP billet -1050 dominators 


Kevko racing oil pan: 14 quarts, 20w-50 semi synethetic oil 


Oil pump: melings high volume blue printed pump


Fuel pumps: clay smith 6 port fuel pump 140 GPH ½ npt in & out 

& Aeromotive marine carbureted SS pump #11211 14” GPH ⅜ npt in & out (can be dead headed) 


Fuel pressure regulator: Holley 12-847 10 A/N in/out, 8 A/N return

Fuel line size: 10 A/N

 


Water Cooling

16 AN coming in on both sides


1” magnaflow water pump to 12AN 


Hardin Marine Sea/Sand Strainer: 1” NPT inlet (16 AN hose) with dual ¾” NPT outlets (12 AN Hose)


Intercooler In 12AN & Out 10 AN

Once we got the engine on the dyno, we discovered we did not need the auxiliary Aeromotive fuel pump. This later just complicated the fuel system plumbing, but it does work. If I were to to do it again, I would only do the large mechanical fuel pump.
